When you see a large group of people carrying flags in Brooks on March 21, come and join the fun!
BCIS, in conjunction with SPEC Association, the City of Brooks, the Francophone Society of Brooks and MHC Brooks Campus invite you to join us on March 21 for a special Unity Walk, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
“The walk begins at City Hall at 4 p.m.,” explained Heather Kazimir, member of the event organizing committee. “Then, we’ll gather for a quick photo and make our way to the Brooks Junior High School.”
There’s also an ongoing social media campaign at the March 21 Eliminate Racism facebook page.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was proclaimed in 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly, drawing on events in Sharpeville, South Africa six years prior, when police opened fire on a group of peaceful demonstrators protesting the apartheid ‘pass laws.’ A total of 69 people were killed as a result.
